Geographic Location
St. John island is located east of Puerto Rico and just a few miles from the eastern tip of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. The island of St John is just 9 miles long and 3 miles wide [28 sq mi], is the smallest of the US Virgin Islands. The other islands making up the USVIs are St Thomas and St Croix.
Climate on St John and Best Time to Go
You'll experience warm weather year-round on St. John Island. The average max temperature is 84-89°F, with August being the hottest month and December-January the coldest. The average min temperature is around 73°F-80°F. Visitors rarely need anything long or heavy, except for when visiting supermarkets, or to protect from sunburn and bug bites. The average water temperature in the ocean is 82°F.
February through May are the driest months, and October to January the wettest. It can rain heavily any day of the year, but usually passes quickly. Rain is actually a welcome relief from the heat and also helps to refill the water cisterns.
Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. August and September are the primary months for hurricanes, followed by October. If you go during this time of the year, consider trip insurance.
If you are a surfer and enjoy waves, you're more likely to find them between November and April.

Hike Forest Trails
About 60% of Saint John is taken up by the Virgin Islands National Park, and which includes tropical forests, beaches, and waterfalls. The Reef Bay Trail is one of the most popular routes through the park. It's only 2.2 miles long, but there are many stops along the way to see rock carvings, ruins of the old sugar mills and exotic birds. Caneel Hill Trail is much tougher, and covers 2.4 miles up a steep rocky incline through the trees, but with great views across to the surrounding islands.
White Sands and Coral Reefs
The beaches are the main draw of Saint Johns, with white sands and clear seas. Visitors occasionally spot dolphins or turtles among the coral reefs. Trunk Bay has an underwater trail that's perfect for snorkeling. Scuba diving is one of the island's most popular activities. You can even book a private scuba diving experience if you're traveling with a group.

Saint John is almost completely covered in forest and has a large number of cuckoos, hummingbirds, and other exotic birds, as well as creatures such as mongoose and feral donkeys, which sometimes roam the streets.
