We’ve decided to split up this culinary ourney into three main categories: St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. Beneath each main category will be a few of the best places to dine. That way, you can easily pick what island should be your home base for the duration of your trip. 

St. Thomas Cuisine 

St. Thomas is one of the best food areas in the Caribbean, and the top dish you can have there is Johnny Cakes. These fried, thin cakes are made from cornmeal, and they’re super popular with natives. What else should you be sure to eat in St. Thomas? Read on! 

1 Pizza Pi 

Pizza Pi  It’s one of the top experiences for pizza. What sets this restaurant apart from the others is that it’s literally on a boat! And yes, you can get carryout or delivery to your boat. With a unique spin like this, Pizza Pi almost doesn’t need to be as good as it is, but they also make truly delicious pizza.

Local favorites include the Mediterranean pizza and the Big Kahuna pizza. Pizza Pi can be found in Christmas Cove and is only accessible via boat. Selected as a Traveler’s Choice for 2022 by Tripadvisor, Pizza Pi is the top-rated restaurant in all of St. Thomas. 

2 Blue Eleven 

When you’re ready to eat something much fancier than pizza, it’s time to head to Yacht Haven Grande for Blue Eleven. Open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday – Sunday, they serve redefined Caribbean cuisine. Each guest can choose from a seven, nine, or 11 course tasting menu, and the offerings include Callaloo, butter poached halibut, and braised wagyu short ribs.

Stone House Café serves guests in a beautifully historic setting, but they don’t put on airs. Therefore, you can come as you are to this restaurant that’s right in the heart of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. Meal options vary from localized dishes such as mahi-mahi with rice all the way to American favorites, including mashed potatoes and gravy. 

Once again, this was selected as a Travelers’ Choice for 2022. Stone House Café also offers vegetarians options, which makes this a fantastic choice for a diverse group. 

St. John Cuisine

According to Food&Wine, St. John is a great pick for a culinary vacation!  Fish & Fungi is the national dish of the USVI, and its creation can be traced back to the days of Danish rule. 

3 Lime Out 

Lime Out is a floating taco restaurant accessible by boat and is Travelers’ Choice #1 restaurant in St. John.  Head to Lime Out to eat the most amazing tacos you’ve ever had. There is plenty of variety:

Even if you miss their breakfast cutoff, you can enjoy a variety of slow-roasted signature sandwiches for lunch. 

Located at Mongoose Junction in Cruz Bay, on St. John, this deli offers vegetarian and gluten friendly options. It currently has a 5-star average out of 563 reviews on Tripadvisor, and it was named a Travelers’ Choice in 2022. 

5 Extra Virgin Bistro 

If you’d like to try something truly special, be sure to make a reservation at Extra Virgin Bistro. Unlike most restaurants, this spot has a pre-fixed, three course tasting menu. It costs $100 per guest, and we can practically guarantee that you’ll leave quite satisfied. 

The first course is an appetizer and may include House Made Ricotta or Duck Confit Leg. The second course is a salad such as the Baby Arugula Salad. Finally, the third course is the main meal and may include a Grilled 5oz Filet Mignon or Langostino & Shrimp Risotto.   

Understandably, this is a top-rated restaurant in Cruz Bay, St. John and, of course, is a Travelers’ Choice for 2022. 

St. Croix Cuisine

Perhaps the best-known food dish in St. Croix is saltfish, which is a freshwater fish that has been put through the process of salt-curing. You can also find Kallaloo here with a unique St. John spin—its base is made from spinach. 

6 Galangal 

Galangal serves Southeast Asian and French cuisine. One of the things that makes Galangal stand out is that the owners take an annual trip to Thailand to acquire authentic spices and curry powder. They’ve been open since 2008 and are one of the top-rated restaurants in Christiansted on St. Croix. 

If you’re a fan of spicy food, be sure to check out their Yam Neua – Thai Grilled Beef Salad, along with their Green Thai Curry. They also have a selection of unusual German wines. It’s no wonder that they’ve been named a Travelers Choice in 2022! 

7 Blues’ Backyard BBQ & Grill 

Is there anything better than eating scrumptious barbeque food in a backyard setting? If you’re not sure about that at the moment, we know you’ll be won over once you try Blues’ Backyard BBQ & Grill! They offer a great value, too, as their prices typically range from $10-$35. Go at the right time of day, and you’ll even get to groove to live music as you eat your meal.

8 Rhythms at Rainbow Beach 

Do you want to combine your search for some of the best cuisine in the Virgin Islands with spending time on a beach? Rhythms at Rainbow Beach is definitely your best option! Located in Frederiksted in St. Croix, the beverages alone will make your taste buds sing. 

Their food menu has the best of both worlds, with some traditional pub fare and some USVI favorites. For example, you can get some Mozzarella Sticks or try their Blackened Mahi Bites. Be aware that Rhythms at Rainbow Beach has kind of a party-like atmosphere and does not take reservations. And, as you’ve gotten used to by now, it’s another Travelers’ Choice in 2022 pick!
